About Crater Lake

Crater Lake

From high atop the rim of Crater Lake, you can see what a wonder the world really is.

A hike down to the water reveals new wonders. The water is so blue, so deep, it’s no surprise it’s the deepest lake in America, and one of the deepest on earth. That’s why it’s one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon.

Surrounded by cliffs almost 2,000 feet high and boasting a picturesque island a violent volcanic past, Crater Lake is also home to hikes in old-growth forest and cross-country ski trips in the winter months. Many of the roads and facilities close during the winter, but the park is open and accessible all year long.

Crater Lake is located in Southern Oregon, which is also home to the world-renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the stunning Rogue River, the Oregon Caves and vineyards, chocolatiers and cheesemakers galore.

Climate:

Most visitors come to Crater Lake National Park during the months of July through mid-September, when the weather is generally mild with little precipitation. Due to the elevation of the park (6,500 ft. at Park Headquarters and 7,100 ft. at Rim Village), weather conditions may change quickly and a warm jacket and wool sweater are always recommended items to carry. During the winter months, from October through June, weather conditions make preparing for extreme winter conditions necessary. Blizzards, high winds, extreme cold and low visibility dominate the weather patterns. Visitors should come with cold weather gear.

Recreation:

A good place to begin your visit to Crater Lake is at one of the two visitor centers. The Steel Information Center lies south of Rim Drive next to park headquarters and is open year-round. In the summer, the Rim Village Visitor Center is open along Rim Drive on the southern side of the caldera. After gathering information on the park and its facilities visitors can make educated decisions about what recreation opportunities to pursue. Hiking, backpacking, camping, picnicking and sight seeing are popular pursuits within the park. Boating and scenic driving around Rim Drive can be enjoyed by visitors during the summer months. In winter snowshoeing and cross-country skiing provide solitude and a little-known view of the park.

    Beautiful lake, though very busy

The lake is breathtaking and something everyone needs to see. Yes, it was crowded and you couldn’t get near the trail down to lake level. I guess because it was closing in a few days, everyone wanted to go there. The other disappointment was the road closure. I really wanted to go to the Pinnacles, but you couldn’t because of the road closure. It was still worth the trip to drive partway around the lake, pulling off at the various pullouts to view the lake from different angles.

Another National Park check off our list

In August my son visited Crater Lake National Park it was awesome, we drove around almost the whole lake. The only problem was we couldn’t drive around the whole lake because of rode work & the trail going down to the boat dock was closed for the next two years. The visitor center was full of information how the lake formed and the surrounding areas

A must see, at least once. Fabulous landscapes.

Crater Lake is definitely a sight to behold. If you thought the caldera at Mount St. Helens was big, it would be considered a little baby caldera compared to the caldera size at Crater Lake. The beauty of Crater Lake is that you can drive around the rim and also take a boat ride down on the lake. The drive to get to the rim is a bit on the lengthier side but the trip is well worth it. There is a rim trail you can drive (but not all the way around as road improvements are currently under way so you’ll need to return on the same rim road. For those who prefer to leave the driving to others, the Crater Lake Trolley Tour is well worth it. There’s a driver and a guide who tells you about the history of Crater Lake while making numerous stops along the way. From the rim drive, you can see the magnitude of the lake and the crater. For adventurous folks, and those who can hike up and down Cleetwood Cove Trail, I’d recommend a Crater Lake Boat Tour. There’s also a boat tour excursion to Wizard Island. If you’re ever in Oregon or Northern California, a side trip to Crater Lake is well worth it. To obtain a luxury travel experience, stay at the Crater Lake Lodge.

    It is the WOW experience

Crater Lake is a one of a kind experience! The views of the lake from every pullout is extraordinary, however they were very crowded. We returned our second day early and scoped out a place to enjoy our breakfast before the crowds descended. It was sad to see Visitors climbing over the rock walls to dangerously take a selfie. I climbed to the viewpoint for Phantom Ship, it’s a don’t miss walk. My husband took the hike to the Watchman Tower, he traversed a small snow field unmelted even in late July. The Visitor Centers are quite small and crowded; long lines to purchase souvenirs. The Ranger stationed at the Steel Visitor Center was very knowledgeable. The Park movie was quite educational. We were very disappointed that the Park didn’t have the Park Unigrid, the map, apparently there was not funding available for it and also for the Junior Ranger Activity books.

    Deepest Lake in the US.

Awesome views and interesting history. Spend the better part of a day driving around rim and stopping at pull off for a different view, and short or long trailers to hike. I would suggest downloading from the App Store the Oregon Audio Guide for Crater Lake.
