Lovely scenic trip. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

It was a lovely, scenic trip on a beautiful day. My husband's ticket allowed him to ride up in the cab of the locomotive with the engineer, which he really enjoyed as a lifelong train enthusiast.

A fun way to explore the coast

This was a fun way to experience the Oregon coast with a toddler who loves trains! We loved getting to see the sights and hear the “choo choo.” The tour guide’s narration was interesting (though it was largely the same on both rides). 30 min. was plenty of time to get off and explore Rockaway before boarding to go back. Because it was cold and rainy, I was glad we sprung for the indoor car though I think the covered dining car would have been fine too.

    Nice time with family.

Disappointing. Hot chocolate and cookies need served together. Couldn’t hear music in our train car. Staff were nice. Went at 4 pm so we did get to see the community’s Christmas lights.

    Slow down and enjoy

We would drive through Wheeler and Rockaway on our way to visit family down in Tillamook. Every time we did we would always say what fun it would be to ride the train one day. We were not disappointed. We rode in the enclosed car which I would recommend as you are allowed to go out to the open cars during the trip to take pictures if you want. Coastal fall weather being what it is, why not be confident you won’t get a weather related surprise? This is a slow train ride. It’s bumpier than you would expect and the step up into the train in Wheeler is a big one. This may pose a challenge for people with mobility issues. Having said that, the train staff are very helpful and would rally to get anyone on board that needed extra help. Wheeler is a sweet town! The antique market held many unusual treasures and is so big you won’t be able to see it all in the 40 minutes you get to stay in Wheeler. There were two places to eat and one is a coffee shop. The lines can be long and the options can be closed without warning. Since you can bring snacks on the train , I would bring a thermos with a hot bevy and some snacks next time. We saw a lot of wildlife on the water. Those hoping for fall colors will likely be underwhelmed as it’s mostly coastal shrubbery and evergreens visible. But the drive to the train does put on a good leaf viewing show. Get there early. There was a line at 10:35 already formed up for the 11:30 trip. The importance of your place in line, dictates your check in which dictates if you get a sea side seat. While you have an assigned car you will not have an assigned seat so if sea side seating is a must take note. Reasonably priced, and unique adventure. When else do you get to ride in a 1913 train car traveling between 5-10 miles an hour while waving at all the friendly fisherman and town folk?
