Each fall, Hood River Valley hosts an old-fashioned harvest festival with local produce, food products, arts and crafts, wine and beer tastings, and all the best the County has to offer. Visitors seldom leave without boxes of Anjou pears, Heirloom apples, pumpkins, berries, and chocolates, as well as a smorgasbord of prepared foods from pies to jams and from smoked salmon to chocolate-covered cherries.

Harvest Fest is a great place to get a head start on holiday shopping too. Here you'll find more than 100 artists offering an array of arts and crafts, including glass, wood sculpture, ceramics, photography, fiber art, jewelry, and much more.

With music all day and entertainment in the evenings, a kid's zone, and a food court with local and traditional favorites, this October festival is a must for the whole family.

Harvest Fest takes place on the Hood River waterfront overlooking the Columbia River, where visitors can relax and watch windsurfers and kiteboarders play on the water. The 72nd Annual Roy Webster Columbia River Cross-Channel Swim. Every year at dawn on Labor Day, 500 hearty souls jump from the deck of the Sternwheeler paddleboat into the mighty Columbia River to swim the 1.1 mile stretch from the Washington State shore to Hood River on the Oregon side of the river. Welcome to the annual Hood River County Chamber of Commerce event, the Columbia River Cross-Channel Swim. The swim originated in 1942 when local orchardist Roy Webster challenged himself and some friends to swim across the river--and it's been happening ever since.

On the day of the swim, participants board the Sternwheeler in the wee hours of the morning to be ferried across the river. When signaled, swimmers jump into the "refreshing" Columbia and head back to the Oregon shore. To help them find their way, a special swim lane lined with volunteers using sail boats, kayaks, and paddle boards are there to guide, encourage, and protect swimmers as they cross the channel.

{"0":
114322
Best Western PLUS Cascade Inn & Suites

The first, or eastern, trailhead leads up into the Huckleberry Mountain area including the McIntyre Ridge Trail #782, the Plaza Trail #783, the Bonanza Trail #786, and the Boulder Ridge Trail $783A. The western trailhead leads across to Eagle Creek, offering a great connection, especially for equestrians. It also junctions in less than 0.1 miles to a trail that heads up to Eagle Creek Butte. The Douglas Trail continues through the forest for 1.4 miles until it reaches the rough access road (Lee's Ranch Road) to the Eagle Creek Trail. Following this trail downhill for approximately one mile leads to the Eagle Creek Trail.

From the eastern trailhead, the trail climbs in the forest one-half mile until a clear-cut is reached. It is best to check with the Zigzag Ranger District for current information regarding logging as the trail may be impassable. A year round stream, providing the only water on the trail, is located one mile from the trailhead. The trail then climbs until an active rock quarry is reached at 1.9 miles. Use caution crossing this area. There is a confusing spot her where a spur trail leads left to the former site of Douglas Camp. Head right to connect with the rest of the trail. A unique view of the area south across Eagle Creek to Old Baldy is found 0.1 miles further. The trail, now on the ridgetop, alternates between uphill and downhill.

At 3.1 miles, the junction with the McIntyre Ridge Trail is reached. The Douglas Trail then climbs via some short, rutted switchbacks for 0.2 miles to a short way-trail on the right. This leads to the rhododendron covered top of Wildcat Mountain, a former lookout site. Phenomenal views of Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood and Mt. It also provides a pleasant alternative to hiking, biking or horseback riding along the shoulder of Highway 26. From Road 20 to 2639, the trail essentially follows along the south side of Highway 26 intersected by both Tollgate Campground and a variety of forest roads. The trail crosses Highway 26 4.6 miles from the beginning, following Road 2639 approximately 100 yards up its east (right) side. There, a yellow metal sign signifying the route of a buried cable indicates the point of continuation.

From 2639, the trail climbs via switchbacks into an open area, part of the 1952 Zigzag burn. The trail then begins to climb, levels off, crosses a saddle, then fluctuates until a scree slope is crossed. A dangerous abandoned mine shaft is passed 6.5 miles from the trailhead. A few hundred yards past the shaft, pass a short spur trail leading to Highway 26
to a point below the Barlow Road Historical Highway marker. From this point the Bridle Trail travels downhill under the old highway via a tunnel and along an abandoned section of road. Stay on the main route, traveling uphill, and cross a small stream twice. The trail switchbacks in a wet area where cedar logs and extensive drainage ditches halt erosion. The Bald Mountain Trail starts near a group campsite located on the Muddy Fork. The trail crosses the Muddy Fork via a foot bridge. Small streams cross the trail at 0.7 and 1.2 miles. The Glade Trail is an old ski trail that connects Timberline Lodge Ski Area with Government Camp; it’s the path of an old tramway that long ago used a refurbished city bus suspended from a cable to ferry people from the small town to the antique lodge. The tramway is long gone, but the Glade Trail remains. It is most often ridden one-way from Timberline, but it is an easy up-and-back for beginners, especially for your first tour or when you’re testing new gear. The Glade Trail is one of the gentlest routes in this book, so choose a day with fresh dry snow or firm cold corn to make this trip worthwhile. With its low elevation, slush is common on this trail; it can be a slow-motion trip down. And early or late in the season, the trail can have scant snow cover. But because of the low-angle slope, it is a pretty safe bet when avalanche danger exists on steeper slopes higher up.

To reach the falls, travel on the trail about 1/4 mile northeast from the Mt. Hood Meadows Access road.

The portion of the trail west of the access road provides easy access to magnificent mountain views and floral displays and is ideal for those unable to visit the rough terrain generally found around the timberline. From the access road, the trail climbs gradually uphill, first through a forested area, then through the open meadows located in the ski area. The well defined tread leads through the open meadows whose floral displays include Indian paintbrush, cat's ears, lupine, bistort, western pasque flower and avalanche lilies early in the season.
