Scenic Drives

You can see a lot of Oregon from behind the wheel of a car.

Oregon’s roads showcase the state’s grandeur. The ability to access Oregon’s diverse natural beauty, as well as historical and cultural sites, has earned it 29 designated Scenic Byways and Tour Routes. On some byways, you’ll drive from the high desert to snowcapped peaks to verdant valleys in one go. You’ll experience the breathtaking views of Hells Canyon, Crater Lake, the Columbia River Gorge and Pacific coastline.

Road-tripping in Oregon means more than just driving from point A to B — it’s about pulling over for a fresh-caught seafood lunch on the coast, watching windsurfers at Hood River, stargazing under some of the darkest skies in the country, and meeting the locals who make these routes special. We’ve rounded up tips, must-see stops, and downloadable maps to make your journey unforgettable.

Tips for Your Oregon Road Trip

  • Remember that the best road trips aren’t rushed. Oregon’s byways are full of small-town diners, hidden hiking trails, farm stands, and photo-worthy pullouts that most people fly right past.
  • If you can, travel midweek or in the spring and fall for lighter traffic and more open lodging options.
  • Don’t forget to fuel up! Some stretches of road, like the High Desert Discovery Scenic Byway in Eastern Oregon, can go 50 miles without a gas station.
  • While you’re enjoying these scenic byways, please remember to drive with care as you are sharing the roads with bicyclists, farm equipment and wildlife.
