Wheeling and Dealing in Eugene

If you’ve always dreamed of traveling the world on a bicycle built for two (or maybe one that folds up), then inspiration is close at hand. Some of today’s most original bike makers call the Willamette Valley town of Eugene home — not surprising, since Eugene is one of the most bike-friendly towns in the country. As you wheel around on the area’s impressive network of bike paths, you might stop in for a tour of one of the bike-making factories. All are happy to oblige you.

Kent Peterson of Co-Motion Cycles describes Eugene as a “hotbed of innovative bicycle design.” He would know — Co-Motion itself is known internationally for its high-end tandems. At the factory, skilled artisans also build world-class touring, racing and commuting bikes, and you’re welcome to come watch. Call ahead if you’re interested in test rides or tours, 541-342-4583, or visit www.co-motion.com.

At The Burley Design Co-operative, child and cargo trailers are mainstays. The company also does a flourishing trade in tandems, road bikes and recumbents (those squatty bikes on which the rider sits back and stretches out). All Burley stuff is built in Eugene, so stop in for a visit and an employee-owner will be glad to show you around. Call ahead for a tour at 541-687-1644, or visit www.burley.com.

Need a bike that folds in 30 seconds and fits neatly into a suitcase? Check out a Bike Friday. “They’re a dream to ride,” says Lynette Chiang, who, before becoming the company’s official customer evangelist, spent five years touring the world on her own faithful Bike Friday. Tours and test rides? Absolutely. Call 800-777- 0258, or visit www.bikefriday.com

Can’t pack light? Take the kitchen sink on a load-carrying work bike built by Human Powered Machines. The company’s mission: to relieve urban congestion and teach local teenagers bicycle-building skills. Employees also make road bikes, three-wheelers, recumbents and hand-powered vehicles. Call 800-343-5568, or visit www.efn.org/~cat. The showroom and fabrication facility, located at Eugene Bicycle Works, is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m., 541-683-3397. You’ll be invited to take any of the bikes for a spin.
