My Travel Journal
The Big Squaw Trail is an old clear-cut unit of ceanothus brush with the rock cliff area of Big Squaw visible in the background. The trail traverses the old unit to the south and enters an old-growth Douglas fir forest. Continue through the old-growth with a moderate elevation gain to some small open clearings at timberline on the south side of the mountain. Cross these openings and switchback up a rocky ridge back to the top. The last half mile has a fast elevation gain. The trail ends on top of the mountain with a nice view of Little River and South Umpqua drainage and views of Black butte and Foster Butte. The site was a former lookout point. Wildflowers are out in late spring and early summer in the open meadows. Rock alpine plants in the area are abundant.
