Portland Without Car Keys

The best ways to experience the sights, sounds and smells of the Rose City are via bicycle, foot or public transportation. Many national magazines have referred to Portland as one of "America's Best Walking Towns," and ranked it one of the "Ten Best Cycling Cities in North America." It's no wonder. Downtown's relatively flat terrain, short city blocks and extensive bike lanes make it a great place for walkers and cyclists. And the Hawthorne, Morrison, Burnside and Broadway bridges offer safe and easy access to eastside attractions. Portland also boasts a renowned public transportation system. Tri-Met buses and MAX light rail are readily available throughout Portland and service the main attractions. Fares are the same for both and tickets are interchangeable. Bus and MAX travel is free in a central 300-block area of downtown. For a fun tour, hop aboard ART, The Cultural Bus (Tri-Met's colorful bus #63). ART's stops include OMSI, the Portland Art Museum, Gov. Tom McCall Waterfront Park, RiverPlace and the Oregon Zoo.
