A Weekend in Garibaldi

A Weekend in Garibaldi

This small port town is located on the north coast’s Tillamook Bay, with a backdrop of thickly forested hills. Its bay-front location makes it a great fishing and crabbing destination for recreational fishermen. Also, this area is rife with history. Long before Captain Robert Gray landed here in 1788, this area was the home to members of the Tillamook, Nehalem and Nestucca Native American tribes.

1. Day One

History & Hiking

Spend the morning exploring maritime history at the Garibaldi Museum. Learn about Captain Robert Gray and see models of his 18th century vessels, the Columbia Rediviva and Lady Washington. Also on display are reproductions of period clothing, musical instruments, and photos and artifacts that tell the story of Garibaldi.

Lunch on fresh oysters or fish and chips at Pacific Oyster Company in nearby Bay City, then head southwest for an afternoon hike on the Bayocean Spit. Here, you’ll see all kinds of bird species (especially during fall and spring migration). By walking the dirt path that hugs Tillamook Bay in parts, you’d never guess that this area was once home to a resort town called Bayocean that began development in 1907. At the height, this resort town had a hotel, bowling alley, huge indoor saltwater swimming pool and hundreds of private lots. However, Mother Nature quickly had her way and massive erosion started wiping out the resort. By 1952, the entire town was gone—buildings had vanished into the sea, or were moved to nearby towns with more stable ground.

2. Day Two

Fishing & Crabbing

Head over to the Garibaldi Marina, where you’ll find a number of options when it comes to seafood. Here, you can rent a boat and crab rings or poles (depending on what’s biting), buy tackle and bait, and troll around the bay in search of your very own seafood dinner. There’s even a fish cleaning station where you can prepare your catch of the day. If you’re more land-bound, Garibaldi Marina rents clamming equipment. Ask about the best spots for clamming, as well as information about required licenses.

While visiting the Oregon Coast, browse a number of restaurants and lodging options in the Garibaldi area.
