These trails are located within the Sutton Recreation Area with trailheads at Sutton Campground, Alder Dune Campground, Holman Vista, and Sutton Lake. They provide approximately six miles of trails accessing coastal dunes and beach, campgrounds, and lakes. Sutton Trails takes visitors through forested areas, changing into sand dunes and beach. Wildlife abounds in the area along the trails. Over 207 types of birds, and nearly 50 types of animals inhabit the area including osprey, black bear, chipmunks, rabbits, opossum, and deer.
Holman Vista is wheelchair accessible, providing a viewing area to the beach. The Darlingtonia bog trail is also wheelchair accessible. This trail allows a close up view of the Darlingtonia Pitcher Plant, a carnivores plant that captures and eats insects. These plants are rare and exist only in bog areas. The trail leads you to the beach, through western snowy plover nesting areas. The snowy plover is considered a threatened species. Nesting and fledgling areas are restricted. Please stay on marked trails. Signs are located at Holman Vista to help you comply with this closure.
Because of the sandy soils, these trails remain accessible throughout the year, even during periods of heavy rains. The only obstacle that may be encountered is for those wishing to cross Sutton Creek to the beach.
