A Weekend in Government Camp

A Weekend in Government Camp

Photographer: Aaron Reed

Located at 4,000 feet on Mt. Hood’s southernmost slopes, the town of Government Camp offers great proximity to year-round mountain fun. In the summer, it’s especially vibrant, as ski and snowboard camp-goers (Timberline’s Palmer Glacier offers summertime skiing) descend on the area.

  • Distance:  5 miles
  • Starting Point:  Mt Hood Skibowl
  • Minimum Driving Time:  5-10 minutes
  • Best Time to Drive:  Anytime

A Great Trip For:

  • Couples
  • Families
  • Outdoor Enthusiasts
  • Scenery
  • Teens/Young Adults

1. Day One

Spend the day at Skibowl Summer Adventure Park in Government Camp. In the winter, Skibowl offers the nation’s biggest night skiing area (of course, it has great day skiing, too), and the fun continues in summer.

The toughest part will be choosing from all the adventures. You can’t miss the half-mile, dual alpine slide. Of course, the Indy Karts are fun, too. Oh, and then there are guided horseback rides, mountain bike trails, a huge rock wall, mini golf, batting cages, a 500 foot zipline and the list goes on!

After you’ve played your heart out, head to Mt. Hood Brewing Co.’s Ice Axe Grill for dinner. If you’re there on a Sunday, ask for the special one-pound Dare burger (if you dare).

Stay at the Collins Lake Resort and take a splash in the pool.

2. Day Two

Drive up another 3,000 feet to explore the historic Timberline Lodge. Hand-built as part of the 1930s Works Progress Administration (WPA) program, Timberline is a study in superb craftsmanship. Pay close attention to the intricate ironwork, the soaring beams and the majestic fireplace. Stick around for a delicious lunch of fresh, northwest fare, then hit the surrounding trails for a hike. Call ahead about booking overnight lodging. The kids will love the outdoor pool.
