Eastern Oregon Places to Dine
In this region that spans the height of Oregon, you’ll find restaurants that prove you can eat well even in our state’s quieter areas. For example, Raphael’s, located in Pendleton—home to the famous Round-Up cowboy bonanza each September—caters to a carnivore’s appetite with venison, elk, buffalo and fare even more exotic. It has also taken the use of the wild huckleberry to a whole new, delicious level. It’s not uncommon for Chef Rob Hoffman to run through 300 gallons/1365 liters of this small, sweet fruit each year. He uses it in entrées, desserts, even his huckleberry margarita. Though he wasn’t the first. Native Americans have long used the cemiitx (huckleberry) in a number of traditional dishes, including pairing it as a jam with Indian Fry Bread for a delicious treat.
The award-winning Foley Station in La Grande is another must-stop (try the lemon poppy seed waffle with almond cream syrup for breakfast), as is Terminal Gravity craft brewery in Enterprise.
