Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in southeast Oregon's High Desert, is a true bird watching gem. Thousands of migrating birds stop here in the fall and in the spring to rest and feed on the 187,000 acres of wetlands, riparian areas and meadows managed by the refuge (Check http://www.fws.gov/malheur/arrivals.htm for bird arrival schedule). The refuge also features a visitor Information building and a museum. Refuge Headquarters is located on the south side of Malheur Lake and is about 32 miles southeast of Burns, Oregon. The refuge and museum are open daily from dawn until dusk. The Visitors Center is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 to 4:00 and on Friday from 8:00 to 3:00. Beginning April 8, 2006 the Visitors Center will be open on weekends and holidays from 8:00 to 4:00.
