1. Get Climbing

Take a beginner rock-climbing class or hone your skills at one of Oregon’s indoor rock climbing gyms.

Portland Rock Gym has a 12,000 square-foot climbing area, in addition to a large bouldering area, and they offer classes of all kinds. Or you can get a day pass and sign up for a lesson over at The Circuit Gym, also in Portland.

In Bend, Central Oregon, Inclimb Rock Gym has 8000 square feet of climbing terrain in addition to a new bouldering room (and it’s not far from Smith Rock, one of Oregon’s famous climbing areas).

In Medford, Southern Oregon, the Rogue Rock Gym has 30-foot walls, top-rope and lead climbing, bouldering, and terrains and routes for all levels of climber.

In Corvallis, the Willamette Valley, you can visit the tallest indoor climbing facility in the northwest at Oregon State University's Indoor Climbing Center. Or if you're traveling to the capital city of Salem, check out the indoor rock wall at the Battlecreek Courthouse Athletic Club.

2. Learn to Ski or Snowboard

Learn to ski or snowboard at one of Oregon’s ten mountain resorts. Sign up for a same-day lesson on the mountain, or plan ahead with the Learn to Ski/Snowboard program at one of Oregon’s ten mountain resorts.

If you haven't already, we hope you'll check out our new Ski Oregon site, which has current conditions, updated mountain happenings and more.

3. Start Cycling

Sign up and start training now for the 21st annual Cycle Oregon, a 7-day fully supported ride that takes 1500 cyclists from all over the world on a journey through Oregon’s less-traveled areas. The ride includes lunch and water stops, shower vans, a beer and wine garden – even a porter service that will deliver luggage and set up your own private tent each night. So all you have to do is ride.

In addition to the 7-day ride (September 6-13, 2008), there is a weekend ride (August 1-3, 2008), which makes a perfect training session for the biggie. So, mark you calendars –and stay tuned for details on this year’s route.

Worst Day of the Year Ride
February 10, 2008
Funny enough, this February ride around Portland (choose between 18 and 40-mile routes) never seems to live up to its name. Often, it’s mild – even sunny – weather! Either way, it’s a blast and attracts some 2,000 riders, who get warm treats (hot chocolate, cider) and good cheer at the end.

The Night Ride
July 12, 2008
This is your chance to ride in the safety of numbers (2,000 bikers to be precise) in the darkness of night. Portland’s Night Ride starts at 9pm and rolls through a mostly flat, 15-mile urban route. Along the way there is a disco-party rest stop, fire jugglers, bagpipes and drums, and an all-you-can-eat doughnut feast at the end of the route.
