Wood, the natural element in a dynamic stream, provides shelter and sources of food for fish. Wood also protects stream banks and channels by reducing the speed of the water.
Present and future generations benefit from the experience of wild trout populations in their natural setting. The Deschutes National Forest, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Trout Unlimited encourage the retention of large wood in the streams of the Metolius River Basin.
The health of the Metolius Basin can be measured by its compliment of diverse self-sustaining wild trout. These are nature's indicators of good management. The tug on a well presented barbless fly means populations and harvest are in balance. It indicates that the food supply, resting and feeding areas, spawning beds, and water quality are all in harmony.
