This 14' X14' cabin was built in 1963, and has been used for over 30 years as a seasonal fire lookout. It is still used occasionally if severely dry weather or large lightning storms require additional eyes on the forest. It is designed to house only one or two people during the summer months. The lookout cabin contains a propane stove, table, chairs and a single bed. Below the cabin is an open deck with picnic table, with a short set of steps providing access to the cabin through a trap door; the steps are narrow and care should be taken when transporting gear. An outhouse is located at the north end of the parking area. Drinking water is Not provided, so take enough water for drinking and cooking for the length on your stay.

The lookout is located approximately 23 miles north of Sisters, Oregon on the edge of a 16-mile long fault block ridge about 500 feet above the Metolius River Valley, at 4800 feet elevation. The view to the west encompasses the Cascades from Mt. Jefferson south to Three Finger Jack and Black Butte. The Lookout is maintained by the Sisters Ranger District as a semi-active fire lookout.

Summer and autumn access to this lookout is possible with any reasonable family vehicle; just be cautious of dusty roads and blind corners. Winter and early spring access may require high clearance four-wheel drive vehicles, snowmobiles, or cross country skis, during a winter of average snowfall winter, it may only be possible to access the lookout with snowmobiles.
