Diamond Peak is located in the Diamond Peak Wilderness which was established by the USDA Forest Service on February 5, 1957. Glaciers have cut deeply into this volcanic peak that was hundreds of feet higher when it was young. Sharp divides (areles) and separate great bowls (cirques) were gouged out by glaciers. Basaltic lava, volcanic cinders and ash built this old strato volcano which is one of hundreds that make up the great "Ring of Fire" around the rim of the Pacific Ocean.

Nearly the entire area is timbered with hemlock, pine and firs. Dozens of small lakes surround the peak near the perimeter of the Wilderness. Black-tailed and mule deer and elk migrate through the area. Bear and small mammals including marmots, snowshoe rabbits, squirrels, pine martens, foxes, and others inhabit the area year-round. Colorful birds and wildflowers complete the scenery.
