The ground upon which Ghost Rock Ranch sits was created by Mt. Mazama. When the volcano erupted thousands of years ago, besides creating Crater Lake she threw pumice for hundreds of miles to the North and North East. This pumice is the wonderful soft ground that ranchers here call “pummy”. Although it doesn’t hold water for plants very well, and it freezes as hard as cement, it is very kind to the horses’ feet.
