Oregon Coast Aquarium

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is home to over 500 species of animals in both indoor and outdoor exhibits (it's also the former home of Keiko, the movie star Orca). Check out the Passages of the Deep, meet sea otters, jellyfish and more!

Sea Lion Caves

The Sea Lion Caves (the world's largest Sea Cave according to Guinness) are located appx. 11 miles north of Florence and offers an awe-inspiring, intimate view of Sea Lions in their natural habitat. Descend over 200-feet into the world's largest and most spectacular sea cave. The cave is the home of the wild steller sea lion, primarily during the fall and winter months and is called the hauling area. The rock ledge below the lookout located just outside the cave is the sea lions home during the spring and summer, and is where they breed and bear their young. Sea lions live at Sea Lion Caves year round.

The Prehistoric Gardens

Step back in time and view Tyrannosaurus Rex, a Triceratops, Pterodactyl and many more. Children will love these life-size dinos, and they'll even learn a little history (such as learning to pronounce each dinosaur's name).

Heceta Head Lighthouse

Named after Don Bruno de Heceta, a Spanish explorer, Heceta Head lighthouse is located north of Florence. This 56-foot tower was first lit in 1894. A half-mile hike will lead visitors to this lighthouse, in addition to seabird nesting sites and nearby Bed and Breakfasts located in the assistant keeper's home.

Editor’s Note: Access to the Heceta Head Lighthouse will close to the public for approximately 8 weeks beginning Aug. 1, 2011 for accessibility improvement projects. The historic assistant lighthouse keeper’s house Bed & Breakfast however, will remain open.

Astoria Column

The Astoria Column was erected in 1926 at an elevation of 600 feet atop Coxcomb Hill, the location of the first permanent American Settlement west of the Rockies. Editor’s Tip: Take the time to climb the 164-step spiral staircase to the viewing deck at the top. For indulging in the challenge, you will be greeted by an unforgettable view of the city and surrounding rivers, bay, forest, mountains and Pacific Ocean. And don’t forget to purchase a wooden glider at the visitor center (proceeds go to the Column) and watch it soar high above the city...it will rekindle the child in you!

Learn to surf

OSA surf lessons provide a great opportunity for all ages to learn the fundamentals of surfing. Our instructors will teach you about the elements of ocean awareness, equipment use, water safety, surf techniques and surf etiquette. Your two-and-a-half hour lesson will begin with approximately forty-five minutes of dry land instruction. Then we head out to the water to practice and catch that first wave. Group surf lessons have a 4:1 student/instructor ratio to assure that you receive the attention and quality of instruction that you deserve. Private lessons are customized for you and your party.

Picture: Haystack Rock located in Cannon Beach at Tolovana Beach State Recreation Site. Haystack Rock rises 235-feet out of the sand and the sea at the low tide line and is a protected Marine Garden. The Rock is also home to many birds, including tufted puffins, gulls, and cormorants. Volunteer interpreters and protectors of the Rock and the life that it supports are on the beach during morning low tides during the summer. Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

The Pacific Ocean on one side, a series of lakes on the other -- with a vast beach right in the middle! The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area beckons you to its warm and inviting sand dunes.

The wind-sculpted sand dunes towering to 500 feet above sea level provide numerous recreational opportunities including off-highway vehicle use, hiking, photography, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding and camping. Visitors enjoy thick “tree islands”, open dunes, marsh-like deflation plains and beaches.

Begin or end each day with a beach yoga class, held on beautiful Cannon Beach. Roadside Paul Bunyan Sculpture

Portland’s Paul Bunyan statue is 37 feet tall and weighs six tons. He wears the traditional plaid shirt (this one red and white) and he holds his axe directly in front of him, its head resting near his boots. He has a full, black beard, and his lips are parted to reveal a solid block of white teeth. His nose is long and would constitute an expert-level ski slope.

The statue was erected in 1959 at the intersection of Interstate and Denver avenues by the Kenton Businessmen’s Association to celebrate Oregon’s centennial. The Centennial Fair was held in the livestock yards nearby. In the days before Interstate 5, travelers from Washington entered Portland through Interstate Avenue. As they crossed the Columbia River, they were almost immediately confronted with the statue’s friendly visage.

The Maize at the Pumpkin Patch

The maize at the pumpkin patch is Oregon's original giant maze of corn planted in a shape that celebrates the local history and identity. We are the busiest corn maze and pumpkin patch in Portand and have been a family tradition for the Past 7 years. Open every year from mid-august through Halloween.

World Forestry Center

All new hands-on, interactive exhibits that are fun for the whole family are waiting to be explored at the Discovery Museum. You can get harnessed in and hoisted up 45 feet to see a bird’s-eye-view of the forest, or take a wet-free raft ride in Class IV rapids. Climb underneath the forest to see the life below, or try your smoke-jumping skills! Round out your adventure with video journeys to Siberia, China, South Africa and Brazil to learn about trees of the world. Come explore, discover and grow at the Discovery Museum! Pittock Mansion

The Pittock Mansion was home to Portland pioneers Henry and Georgiana Pittock from 1914 to 1919. During the late 1800s and the early 1900s, their lives and work paralleled the growth of Portland from a small Northwest town site to a thriving city with a quarter million population. With its eclectic architectural design and richly decorated interior, including family artifacts, the Pittock Mansion stands today as a living memorial of this family's contributions to the blossoming of Portland and its people.

Note: Pittock Mansion is partially wheelchair accessible. The wheelchair entrance is located on the lower level and the lower level is accessible to all parties.

Portlandia

Portlandia is a sculpture by Raymond Kaskey located above the entrance of Michael Graves' Portland Building in downtown Portland. It is notable for being the second largest copper repoussé statue in the United States after the Statue of Liberty. Portlandia is an example of the city's Public Art Program that works with the public and private sectors to integrate art into communities that reflects a range of disciplines, media and thinking.

Installed in September 1985 after being floated down the Willamette River on a barge, Portlandia is based on the design of the city seal. It depicts a woman in classical clothes with a trident reaching down with right hand to greet visitors to the building.

The statue itself is 36 feet (11 meters) high. If standing, the woman would be approximately 50 feet (15 m) high. The statue is above street level, and faces a narrow, bus-only, tree-lined street.

Wings of Freedom Showcase at The Bomber Restaurant

Open Friday-Sunday 10am-3pm. A unique American diner and museum with a landmark B-17G bomber, which has the lowest airtime of any B-17 in the world This airplane was purchased as war surplus after World War II. A mission has been established to restore it to air-worthy condition.

World Forestry Center

Founded in 1964 in Portland, Oregon, the World Forestry Center is a nonprofit educational institution. Our mission is to educate and inform people about the world's forests and trees, and their importance to all life, in order to promote a balanced and sustainable future.

3D Center of Art and Photography

Oregon Historical Society

The Oregon Historical Society, founded in 1898 is Oregon's premiere history museum. Portland Japanese Garden

MAX of Portland

TriMet's 44-mile MAX (Metropolitan Area Express) offers train-to-plane service, and door-to-door access to one of the richest collections of visitor attractions. A 10-minute ride from downtown will deliver you to Washington Park station, the deepest underground transit station in North America. The stop, 260-feet below the Earth's surface, provides nearby access to Washington Park, the Oregon Zoo, the World Forestry Center, the Vietnam Veterans Living Memorial, Hoyt Arboretum and the Portland Children's Museum.

Portland Skate Park

The ground beneath the Burnside bridge has been transformed into a concrete skate Mecca.

It has been featured in several skate videos in the past and continues to be Portland’s main skate attraction, even being featured in "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" video game. It has been gradually expanded to the entire area under the bridge. It features two concrete bowls (one affectionately called the "death bowl") as well as several quarter pipes and corner bowls that reach vert. There is a spine and a half pyramid to the side and the entire park has good coping and high walls.

Sauvie Island

Sauvie Island is the largest island along the Columbia River and lies ten miles west-northwest of downtown Portland, between the Columbia River to the east, the Multnomah Channel to the west, and the Willamette River to the south.

The island is predominantly farmland and wildlife refuge and has become a popular destination for a variety of people — those seeking the freshest and best produce (the island is home to a number of farms); birdwatchers looking for sandhill cranes, bald eagles, blue herons, or migrating geese; and those wanting to hike, bike, fish, hunt, or use the public beaches (Walton Beach, North Unit Beach, and the clothing-optional Collins Beach on the island's east coast).

Swifts Return to Wallace School

Tens of thousands of migratory Vaux's Swifts make their nightly descent into the chimney of Chapman Elementary School in Portland, Oregon. They use this chimney for their nightly roost before continuing on their journey to Central America. This happens for about three weeks every September.

Oregon Ballet Theatre

This classically based professional ballet company performs five programs a year at the Portland Center for Performing Arts, in addition to regional and national tours. And they have quite a following thanks to their celebrated reputation for world-class performances. Oregon Symphony

The Oregon Symphony now ranks among the largest orchestras in the nation and as one of the largest arts organizations in the Northwest. Windsurfing and Kiteboarding the Columbia River Gorge

Maybe you've heard of Hood River? It's a big name in the world of windsurfing and kite boarding. In fact, some call Hood River, just 45 minutes east of Portland, the windsurfing capital of the world, thanks to the incredible gorge winds that blow along the Columbia River. On an average breezy day, it's typical to see dozens (if not hundreds) of colorful sails dancing across the wide river. Both windsurfing and kite boarding lessons and equipment are available in and around Hood River. Come for the day, or rent a house and stay for a week -- or longer!

Bonneville Dam

Bonneville Lock and Dam consists of serveral dam structures that together complete a span of the Columbia River between the US states of Oregon and Washington at River Mile 146.1. The dam is located 40 miles east of Portland, Oregon, in what is now the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The Primary function of Bonneville Lock and Dam are those of electrical power generation and river navigation. The dam was built and is managed by the US Army Coprs. of Engineers. Electrical power generated at Bonneville is distributed by the Bonneville Power Administration. Bonneville Lock and Dam is named for the Army Capt. Benjamin Bonneville, an early explorer credited with charting much of the Oregon Trail.

Timberline Lodge

Perched 6,000 feet up on the massive south shoulder of Mt. Hood, Timberline Lodge is a classic WPA-era mountain lodge that was built completely by hand from local stone. The lodge is an masterpiece of Cascadian architecture and its long hallways of fir and cedar were made infamous by Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

Built in 1936 as a home for skiers and climbers, Timberline is today home to North America's longest ski season (see Timberline's ski profile). In the height of winter, the ground floor of the lodge is typically fully buried in snow, with entry through a snow tunnel, or directly into the second floor. The lodge together with its cozy rooms, two resident St. Bernards (Bruno and Heidi) pub and restaurant, is a welcome relief after a full day on the slopes.

Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum

Bridge of the Gods

Built in 1926, crosses the Columbia River and is a part of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. The bridge is named from a Native American Legend.

Mount Hood

Snow-capped and serene, Mount Hood is actually a dormant volcano. The mountain is surrounded by an immense national forest, making it the perfect area for snowsports, trekking, and other recreational activities. At 11,239 feet, Mount Hood stands watch over the awe-inspiring Columbia River Gorge

Multnomah Falls

Multnomah Falls is arguably "the grandaddy" of the 77 waterfalls on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge. At 620 feet, only three falls in the nation are higher, and none are more beautiful. It attracts large crowds on summer weekends, so plan accordingly. A trail from famous Multnomah Falls Lodge (1925) climbs to the Simon Benson Bridge across the lower cascade, then zigzags to the top.

Fall folliage alert: Autumn’s fiery colors provide a stunning backdrop for Multnomah Falls. To get the full spectrum, you can hike to the top of the falls. It’s 1.2 miles and gains about 600 feet in elevation. Once you’re at the top of the falls, you can take the six-mile Wahkeena Loop Trail, or continue on to the top of Larch Mountain to extend your colorful hike.

The Stayton-Jordan Covered Bridge

Prior to 1986, the Jordan Bridge spanned Thomas Creek in neighboring Linn County several miles east of Scio. The original bridge location had once been the site for a dam, a cheese factory, two mills and a general store.

Patterned after the Jordan Bridge, which spanned Thomas Creek, east of Scio it was moved to Pioneer Park in 1988, but burned in 1994. The current Stayton-Jordan Bridge is newly rebuilt.

99 W Drive-In, Twin Cinemas Cameo Theatre

The 99W Drive-in theatre opened in August 1953 with `Sea Devils` and `Under the Sahara` as the first features to be played there. The theatre was built by my Grandfather, J.T. (Ted) Francis who, at 98 years old, worked 6 nights a week at the Cameo theatre until a few weeks before his death in 1999.

The Cameo is a nice single screen cement poured movie house built in 1937 located in downtown Newberg. Open every night of the week.

Enchanted Forest

This 20-acre outdoor theme park, nestled in a forested setting just off I-5 in Salem, is something of an Oregon icon. It has been family owned and operated since opening its doors in 1971. Today, there are kiddy rides, slides and storybook lane for the younger set, and a haunted house, Big Timber Log Ride (the biggest log ride in the Northwest) and a roller coaster for the slightly older bunch.

Founded in 1882, Mount Angel Abbey is a Benedictine Monastery. Visitors may join the Monks in prayer, stroll the grounds, and visit the Alvar Aalto Library and modest museum.

Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum

The Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum is best known as the home of the world’s largest wooden flying boat, the ”Spruce Goose,” the SR-71 “Blackbird,” the Titan II SLV Missile and the P-38 “Lightning.” In addition, there are more than 200 historic aircraft, spacecraft and exhibits on display, along with Oregon’s largest IMAX® 3D theater. The hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily except when it is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Easter. The Museum facility is located at 500 NE Captain Michael King Smith Way, across the highway from the McMinnville Airport and about three miles southeast of McMinnville, Ore., on Highway 18. Dee Wright Observatory

This historic observatory, built of lava rock, offers panoramic views of Cascade Mountain peaks. There are interpretive panels, a half-mile (0.8 km) paved trail through lava flows, and a wheelchair accessible trail up into the observatory.

The Caveman

An imposing representation of primitive man has guarded the entrance to Grants Pass since 1971, when the town’s “Caveman Club” erected him. The caveman is 17-ft. tall, on a rock pedestal. He was created by International Fiberglass (Muffler Men makers)to celebrate a strange brand of town boosterism that started in 1922.

Local businessmen would don furs and animal skins, marching down Main Street brandishing their ceremonial spikey caveman clubs. The activity was to promote caverns at nearby Cave Junction.

Oregon Vortex

Step into the twilight zone at the Oregon Vortex, where the improbable is the commonplace and everyday physical facts are reversed. It is an area of naturally occurring visual and perceptual phenomena, which can be captured on film.

Historic Jacksonville

While Jacksonville is not necessaily a "ghost town" in the practical sense of the term, it is stil technically designated as such due to the fact that its population today is still much smaller than the boom years.

Jacksonville is one of a handful of places in the country where the entire town is listed on the national historic register. Charming streets and historic homes offer a glimpse into early Oregon history. Don't miss the Southern Oregon Museum and the Britt Festival.

Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake National Park is host to a diverse array of activities. While enjoying the natural scenic wonders, park visitors may hike in old growth forests, participate in a variety of interpretive activites, camp out or stay at the Historic Crater Lake Lodge, or even cross-country ski during the eight-month-long winters in the high Cascades. The park is always open, but many of the roads and facilities are closed during the winter.

Klamath Basin Birding Trail

Situated near the Southern Oregon/Northern California state line, the Klamath Basin Birding Trail (KBBT) includes 47 birding locations where birding enthusiasts can spot more than 350 species among the mountains and marshes of the area. There are eight state and federal wildlife refuges in the Klamath Basin, and 80 percent of the waterfowl that travel the Pacific Flyway come through this area (including one of the largest concentrations of Bald Eagles in the continental US). The Klamath Basin was rated on Sunset Magazine's list of Fantastic Five Birding Destinations in the West.

Oregon Caves National Monument

Oregon Caves National Monument is small in size, 480 acres, but rich in diversity. Above ground, the monument encompasses a remnant old-growth coniferous forest including a Douglas-fir tree with the widest known girth in Oregon. Three hiking trails provide access this forest. Below ground is a marble cave created by natural forces over hundreds of thousands of years in one of the world's most diverse geologic realms.

Oregon Shakespeare Festival

The Tony Award-winning Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF), located in charming downtown Ashland, Oregon, is one of the nation's true artistic gems. With tours and fun educational events and an ever-changing free summer entertainment on the Green Show stage, OSF is an immersive cultural experience for the whole family that you'll never forget.

Deschutes Brewery

In the high and dry Bend area in central Oregon, where craft brewing is as much a part of the landscape as clear skies, hiking trails and Mt. Bachelor. The labels on the bottles at Deschutes Brewery, Oregon’s second-largest brewer, say it all: Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Black Butte Porter, Obsidian Stout—each one a tribute to the region’s natural wonders. You can get bottles at the markets, but it’s best on draft at the Deschutes Public House, where you can also try beers made and served nowhere else.

Shaniko

An early 1900s wool shipping center on US 97, in north-central Oregon's high grasslands, 36 miles north of Madras, and 58 miles south of Biggs. It incorporated in 1901, at which time it had a bank, a couple blacksmith shops, two-story wooden city hall/fire station/jail, several hotels, two newspapers, a post office, saloons, school, two stores and many other structures. Church services were held in the school building. Today a handful of people still watch over the old two-story hotel, town hall, livery stables and a strip of wooden buildings.

Mt Bachelor

Mt. Bachelor is one of the Pacific Northwest’s largest ski areas.
Only 20 minutes form Bend and Sunriver, Mt. Bachelor, a 9,065-foot volcanic cone, offers world-class skiing and snowboarding from November through May. Sherars Falls

Sherar’s Falls, located within the ceded lands on the Deschutes River, is a traditional fishing site used by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs since time immemorial. Purchased by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs in the 1970s, the falls and lands adjacent to them have been put into trust. Currently, the Bureau of Land Management maintains the lands for the Tribe, however, tribal members continue to build their scaffols and fish for salmon at the falls. The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs charges a use fee for non-tribal members to park at Sherar’s Fall.

Pendleton Underground Tours

Experience a trip underground and take a lively look into Pendleton's infamous and entertaining past. Along with the historical tour there is a gift shop and also a western art gallery featuring Duff Severe's work, (no charge to view the gallery). We are a non-profit organization.

ADMISSION: (as of 2006) The tour is a 90 minute event and it is $15 per person per tour; ages 6 and up only. Please call ahead for reservations and current schedules. There is bus parking available (1 block away).

Great attraction for: family, couples, teens, young adults, history buffs.

Grant County Historical Museum

Gold was discovered right here in 1862. Artifacts, equipment, and stories of the region's early mining and ranching history.

Kam Wah Chung Museum

Kam Wah Chung Museum is a must-see for anyone with an interest in Oregon history. This structure was built as a trading post on The Dalles Military Road in the mid-1800's. Chinese businessman Lung On and herbal doctor Ing Hay worked out of this building. Dr. Hay administered care to the Chinese gold-mine workers, pioneers, and others from the John Day area and beyond by using traditional Chinese remedies.

Built to preserve the legacy of the Chinese workforce in Oregon, the museum contains artifacts and displays that share some of the trials of everyday life of these people.

The museum is open seven days a week, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The museum closes Sept. 30, 2006, for the season and re-opens May 1. Call (541) 575-2800 or (800) 551-6949 for more information.

Tamástslikt Cultural Institute

Tamástslikt Cultural Institute presents an entirely new perspective on history - that of the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla Tribes.

The permanent exhibit gallery tells the story of the Tribes in three parts: "We Were," "We Are," and "We Will Be." The exhibit experience begins with a walk at the base of the Blue Mountains, leading to the permanent gallery where the Tribes' story is shared through exhibits designed by world renowned Jean Jacque Andre. An art gallery hosts changing exhibits and showcase local and regional art by tribal artists.

The 45,000 square foot facility also features a visitor services wing complete with a museum store emphasizing local tribal arts and crafts, multi-use theater, and Café.

The museum services wing features archives and photo collections, the Institute's permanent artifact collection, a community storage facility, and other facilities for caring for artifacts, photos, and documents. Tamástslikt , which means "interpret" in the Walla Walla native language, is part of the Wildhorse Resort that also features a casino, 100-room hotel, 100-space RV park, and 18-hole championship golf course.

Painted Hills Unit (John Day Fossil Beds National Monument)

The appropriately named "Painted Hills" are one of the three units that make up the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, and is located in Wheeler County (9 miles northwest of Mitchell), and 75 miles east of Bend.

The hills get their name from the delicately colored stratifications in the soil and the yellows, golds, blacks, and reds of the Painted Hills are best seen in the late afternoon. Tones and hue may appear to change from one visit to another, as the claystones differwith ever-changing light and moisture levels.

Don't forget to check out the Sheep Rock Unit and the Clarno Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

The Shoe Tree

The shoe tree is on Highway 26, east of Mitchell, OR near mile marker 89.

Thomas Condon Paleontology Center at Sheep Rock Unit (John Day Fossil Beds)

Did you know that early cousins of elephants, camels, rhinoceroses and sabertooth tigers used to roam freely in Eastern Oregon? You can see evidence of this at the new Thomas Condon Paleontology Center Museum, located in the Sheep Rock Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds. Here, scientists actively study the area's 50 million years of plant and animal evolution through a massive collection of 40,000 fossils. And there are plenty of fun, interactive exhibits microscopes, touch tables, fossils, bones, formations and a Junior Ranger Program o keep the kids entertained. (The Museum is open daily, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free admission)

Wallowa Lake Tramway

Redwood Bench and Table Company

Western Juniper is common in the high altitudes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California and the high deserts of Central Oregon. This species may develop thick, long roots that entwine rock outcrops which is mimicked in the shape of the twisted branches. Finding a dying twisted Juniper is itself a difficult task because they are often located on high rock outcroppings far off the beaten path.

Cape Perpetua Scenic Area

The U.S. Forest Service maintains the Cape's 26 miles of hiking trails through coastal mature and old growth rain forests, to breathtaking vistas, tidepools and the beach. The viewpoints and trails are open to the public year round. Some of the trails are wheelchair accessible, one is suitable for mountain biking, and all provide opportunities for birding. The Forest Service at Cape Perpetua also offers interpretive walks and operates a Visitors Center with natural and cultural history exhibits, an interactive children's corner, and a theater with nature films.

Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint

Heceta Head State Park is located in a cove at the mouth of Cape Creek. The park includes Devil's Elbow Beach, tidepools and outstanding wildlife viewing.

There are picnic tables sheltered from the wind and a great view of the ocean. A short trail leads to the historic Heceta Head lighthouse and lighthouse keepers house. A recently completed trail gives you a spectacular view of the coast north to Cape Perpetua.

Heceta Head trail is part of a 7-mile network. Trails of varying difficulty feature beach and wildlife viewing areas. Wildlife refuge islands feature a view of puffins, cormorants, gulls and other bird nesting areas. Sea lions and whales can be seen from the beach and cliff-top lighthouse.

There are natural caves, tidepools, a sandy beach for building sandcastles and good conditions for surfing. There are plenty of picnic tables for groups and areas to set up volleyball nets.

Vital stats: A small fee is charged to access the park's day-use areas. This beautiful park offers beach access, tours of the lighthouse and excellent opportunities for viewing coastal scenery, marine mammal watching, and bird-watching. In addition it offers hiking, picnicking and fishing.

D River State Recreation Site

The shortest river in the world, D River flows a mere 200 yards from Devils Lake into the roaring ocean. The park is right off the highway with easy access to a busy -- and reliably windy --beach. D River Wayside is home to a pair of the world's largest kite festivals every spring and fall which gives Lincoln City the name Kite Capital of the World.

Vital stats: There is no fee to use this park. For information, call 1-800-551-6949. D River offers beach access, fishing, interpretive signs and the worlds largest kite festivals in the spring and fall.

Oceanside Beach State Recreation Site

Located in the center of the community of Oceanside, this park offers some of the best agate hunting during the winter season when the sand is stripped away by ocean currents. During the summer season, the park is a popular place to beachcomb, explore tidepools and surf. The sky above the park is occasionally filled with colorful hang gliders, paragliders and kites.

Vital stats: There is no fee to use this park. The park is open year-round. Oceanside Beach offers beach access and opportunities for beachcombing, picnicking, windsurfing, surfing, fishing, bird watching and marine mammal watching.

Tolovana Beach State Recreation Site

After a long day of shopping in Cannon Beach's boutiques, head for the heart of the city: Tolovana Wayside. Just a few steps down from the parking lot, you're on the beach with a spectacular view of Haystack Rock.

A short walk down this lovely beach and you'll be at the base of Haystack Rock, which is a dedicated, protected Marine Garden. The rock rises 235 feet out of the sand and the sea at the low tide line in Cannon Beach Oregon. Haystack Rock and the area around it are abundant with sea life. The Rock is also home to many birds, including tufted puffins, gulls, and cormorants. Volunteer interpreters and protectors of the Rock and the life that it supports are on the beach during morning low tides during the summer.

Vital stats: There is no fee to use this park. Tolovana Beach State Recreation Site offers beach access and opportunities for beachcombing, picnicking, fishing, viewing marine and terrestrial wildlife, and viewing coastal scenery.

Eel Creek Campground

Eel Creek Campground is located on the western end of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Facilities include fire rings, picnic tables, drinking water, restrooms, trailer parking and refuse receptacles. Camp sites are 35 feet in length.

Springwater Corridor

Includes disabled access: park restroom, natural area, paths – paved, picnic tables, trails – biking, trails – equestrian, trails – hiking and vista point. The Springwater Corridor is the major southeast segment of the 40-Mile Loop which was inspired by the 1903 Olmsted plan of a parkway and boulevard loop to connect park sites. The eventual developed trail will be over 21 miles long. For the most part, the trail is well separated from the public road. The route is a scenic one, encompassing wetlands, buttes, agricultural fields and pastures, residential and industrial neighborhoods. Close to Johnson Creek, one of the last free-flowing streams in Portland's urban area, the trail criss-crosses the stream on its course to the Willamette River. The Corridor connects several parks and open spaces including Tideman Johnson Nature Park, Beggars-tick Wildlife Refuge, the I-205 Bike Path, Leach Botanical Garden, Powell Butte Nature Park, and Gresham's Main City Park.

Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade

The Esplanade is 1.5 miles long, extending north from the Hawthorne Bridge, past the Morrison and Burnside Bridges, to the Steel Bridge with connections to eastside neighborhoods as well as across the river to Gov. Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Includes boat dock, natural area, paths – paved, statue or public art, trails – biking, trails – hiking, visitor attraction and vista point.

Kelley Point Park

New Englander Hall Jackson Kelley (1790-1874) was one of the most vocal advocates for Oregon in the first half of the 19th century. In 1828 he published Settlement on the Oregon River, and nine more pamphlets on a similar theme over the next 40 years. A bit deranged, he spent most of his life bitterly trying to win notice - and payment - for having sparked American interest in the Pacific Northwest.

Kelley visited Oregon briefly in 1834. During that time, Sellwood, Milwaukie, and Oregon City were all vying with Portland to be the main city at the north end of the Willamette. Among these was Kelley's unsuccessful attempt to establish a city at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. In 1926 this site was named Kelley Point.

Kelley Point Park was originally created by the Port of Portland, who covered the flood-prone peninsula with tons of river dredgings. The site that was once envisioned as a city is now a park on an isolated tip of land.

Mill Ends Park

Mill Ends Park has temporarily been moved to make way for construction along SW Naito Parkway. From February to July 2006, Mill Ends Park will be located at Two World Trade Center Plaza in downtown Portland - about 80 feet from its old location. After construction, Mill Ends Park will find a new and permanent home, approximately 7.5 feet east of its old location, in the median along SW Naito Parkway.

Mt Tabor Park

Includes basketball court – outdoor, disabled access: park play area, disabled access: park restroom, disabled access: picnic area, dog off-leash area, paths – paved, paths – unpaved, picnic site – reservable, picnic tables, playground, stage – outdoor, statue or public art, tennis court – outdoor and wedding site – reservable. Portland's Mt. Tabor was named after another Mt. Tabor, which sits six miles east of Nazareth in Israel.

Washington Park

Washington Park is one of the oldest, best-loved, and well-used parks in Portland.

Within Washington Park, you'll find the Japanese Garden and International Rose Test Garden, which are adjacent to one another on the more developed east side of the park. On the west side of the park (farther from the city center), you'll find not only the Hoyt Arboretum but also the Oregon Zoo, World Forestry Center, and the Children's Museum 2nd Generation.

Old Growth Trail

Old Growth Trails ideal for all age groups, offers spectacular views of an old growth forest and is equipped with interpretive signs to enhance your knowledge of the forest. You can do a loop by returning on a barrier-free
portion of the Lake Shore Trail.

Rooster Rock State Park

One of the largest swimming areas near Portland serves visitors who want a natural experience. A variety of water activities are available at this exceptional state park.

Spring at Rooster Rock is where spring fever happens. Imagine the first warm, sunny days of spring where meadows of wild roses and the spicy scent of Oregon grape combine with an endless panorama of the Cascade mountains, blue sky and the deep blue waters of the Columbia River.

Clackamas River

The Clackamas is an incredible resource for Portland area residents—after all, how many major metropolitan areas have a federally designated “National Wild and Scenic” river flowing through their backyard! The river’s upper stretches, where it flows through dense forests and basalt canyons, offers up white water rafting and kayaking opportunities to challenge the most expert paddlers. The lower river below Estacada is a great place for beginning paddlers to get a taste of river running. This stretch also attracts many anglers seeking chinook and summer steelhead in the spring, coho (silver) salmon in the fall, and winter steelhead from December through March. The last few miles above its confluence with the Willamette are one of Portlanders’ favorite fishing holes.

Mt. Hood Meadows

Timberline Ski Area

The only ski area in North America that's open 12 months of the year. The lodge is located near the top of Mt. Hood and offers some of the state’s most scenic skiing and up to 3,590 vertical feet. Afterward, dine or stay overnight at historic Timberline Lodge, a classic WPA-era lodge, complete with two resident St. Bernards named Bruno and Heidi. The cozy lodge is a welcome relief after a full day on the slopes. In the height of winter, the ground floor of the lodge is typically fully buried in snow, with entry through a snow tunnel, or directly into the second floor.

Barlow Pass

This route is a great cross-country hike that uses the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. In crossing from Twin Lakes over to the Barlow Pass area, you’ll see a lot of the rugged wilderness for which Mount Hood’s lowlands are famous. Climbing up from Wapinitia Pass gives you the sort of view that alternately confounds and delights Oregon wilderness enthusiasts: rolling evergreen forest, in this time of year frosted white.

Summit Ski Area

Collier Memorial State Park

Collier Memorial State Park features an outdoor museum of historic logging equipment and a relocated pioneer village. As the state's finest logging museum, you'll see rare and antique logging equipment dating to the 1880s as well as more recent pieces. Railroad buffs will enjoy learning about the role the railroad played in logging. Your can imagine the rugged woodsmen and the immense task of moving raw timber they tackled with innovation and brute force. The pioneer village gives you another insight into how these families once lived.

The Williamson River and crystal-clear Spring Creek meet in the park. The Williamson River is regionally famous for its quality trout fishery and consistently produces trophy fish. Spring Creek gushes dramatically out of a nearby spring and then paints a picture-perfect scene at it flows through the park.

In the summer, movies about old-time logging and other topics are shown every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. The series continues right through Labor Day. During the day, the park naturalist schedules short hikes along the Williamson River. Check the park when you arrive for a list of times.

Vital Stats: The park is open from April through October. The campground has 50 sites with full hookup, and 18 tent sites (maximum site 60 feet) all available on a first-come, first-served basis. This park has laundry facilities.

Mt. Ashland Ski Resort

Community-owned Mt. Ashland, the highest mountain in Southern Oregon’s Siskiyou range, is one of the only slopes in the nation where skiers can carve graceful turns during the day and enjoy clever turns of phrase at night. It’s located just 30 minutes from Ashland, where après- ski options include a vibrant arts community, superb restaurants, quaint bed and breakfasts, and a world-famous Shakespeare Festival.

From Mt. Ashland’s 7,533-foot summit, skiers and snowboarders ride a drop of 1,150 vertical feet. There is a remarkable terrain park, and the four chairlifts provide access to 23 trails as well as to open bowl skiing. The mountain’s 200 acres of skiing offer a number of challenging runs, including Ado and Balcony, leading locals to brag: If you can ski Ashland, you can ski anywhere.

White River Falls State Park

One of Oregon's secret hideaways is located just east of Tygh Valley along Highway 216. The White River plunges 90 feet over a basalt shelf. The park offers excellent viewpoints of the White River falls.

A rugged quarter-mile trail takes hikers down deep within the canyon to the historic hydroelectric power plant at the base of the raw, churning power of the falls. The power plant supplied electricity to Wasco and Sherman Counties from 1910 until the completion of The Dalles Dam in 1960.

White River Falls State Park is a popular and scenic picnicking, hiking and fishing retreat for visitors to the Deschutes River corridor.

Lower Deschutes River

The Deschutes River slices through the center of Oregon, flowing from humble beginnings at Little Lava Lake in the Cascade Mountains to its terminus at the Columbia River. The Lower Deschutes—the 100 miles from Pelton Dam to the Columbia—is a powerful, even imposing, river. The rugged, 2,000-foot tall basalt canyons and high desert environs that envelop the Deschutes augment its stark beauty; a river of such fecundity seems misplaced amidst such stark, sagebrush surroundings, a veritable oasis.

The Lower Deschutes is revered by anglers and whitewater enthusiasts alike. The river’s native rainbow trout and runs of native and hatchery-bred steelhead make it one of the west’s most popular angling venues; drift boaters set forth from a variety of launches from Warm Springs in the south to Mack’s Canyon in the north for single-day or multi-day floats. Jet boaters head upstream from the mouth to ply famed fishing holes like Steelie Flats. Rafters and kayakers celebrate the Deschutes for its many famed rapids with colorful names like Buckskin Mary, Box Car and White Horse.

Mt Bachelor

Buck Creek Trail

This trail is open to foot and horse traffic only since it is located within the North Fork Umatilla Wilderness. The trail follows Buck Creek for 3.5 miles, crossing the creek numerous times (30) as it winds through the forest. Users should use caution on creek crossing during the spring run off periods.

The trail is easy going as it climbs only 800' to where it merges with Lake Creek Trail #3079. Lake Creek Trail continues approx. 2 more miles up the Lake Creek drainage before leaving the wilderness area. Once the trail has left the wilderness area, it continues for another 2 miles until it reaches Forest Service Road #3150. This portion of the trail goes through clearcuts and burned areas. Potable water and vault toilets are available at the Umatilla Forks day use area.

Farewell Bend State Recreation Area

Historic Farewell Bend State Recreation Area offers a beautiful desert experience on the banks of the Snake River's Brownlee Reservoir. Pioneers on the Oregon Trail took a final rest here before leaving the Snake River to travel wearily inland on their way to Oregon City.

Historic markers and interpretive displays provide visitors with information on Farewell Bend's significance on the Oregon Trail. The RV and tent campgrounds make excellent base camps as you explore the region. The campground offers 91 electrical sites, 45 primitive sites and four walk-in tent sites. Three covered camper wagons, four tepees and two log cabins are also available for overnight stays. Oregon Trail wagon ruts are visible just up the road. The National Oregon Trail Interpretive Center is less than an hour away in Baker City.

If history isn't your game, come for the sports! The park's lighted boat ramp offers boater, water skiers and anglers access to Brownlee Reservoir. There are horseshoe pits, basketball hoops and a sand volleyball court for you land lovers. Best of all, while resting from the day's activities, you can enjoy the scenery and amenities. Picnic on the cool grass, swim in Brownlee Reservoir, spend the night in an authentic covered wagon or Native American teepee, roast marshmallows over your campfire or attend an evening interpretive program at the amphitheater.

This highly developed park offers a range of outdoor recreation opportunities. The most popular activities include camping, boating, fishing, water skiing, swimming, picnicking, viewing historic sites and exhibits, viewing wildlife, bird watching, attending interpretive programs, cabin stays, tepee stays and covered wagon stays.

Fort Rock Cave

The Fort Rock Basin has served as a vital part of the Native American lifestyle. Fort Rock Cave is near Fort Rock State Natural Area, and is the site of an archaeological discovery of several 9,000-year-old sagebrush sandals. This property serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that has shaped so much of Oregon's history. The story of the Fort Rock Basin is told by the artifacts left behind and by the rich oral tradition of the tribes who claim the area as home.

Fort Rock Cave is a National Heritage site and is open only by a state park guided tour. The location is not available here on the website. Access is limited to two weekends per month from April 1 through November 1.

Lake Owyhee State Park

Lake Owyhee State Park lies next to a 53-mile long lake formed by Owyhee Dam. Breathtaking views of the Owyhee Mountains await.

A boat trip up the lake from the park is one of the many not-to-be-missed experiences in eastern Oregon. Look closely! Bighorn sheep and pronghorn antelope live here, as do golden eagles, coyotes,mule deer, wild horses and (rarely) mountain lions. Critters aren't your game? Rockhounds and hikers are welcome to this wilderness paradise. Use the park as your base camp to explore the badlands of Oregon.

Vital stats: Food, marine fuel and ice are all available. All campsites are first-come, first-served. Two tepees are reservable by phone. When you rent a tepee, you get free use of a canoe. The campground offers 30 electrical sites and 10 tent sites (maximum site 55 feet). The park is open March - November. Lake Owyhee offers visitors, hiking, swimming, boating, fishing picnicking, animal watching and historic sites. To book a teepee, please call 1.800.452.5687.

Ski Hut to Hut in the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area

The Eagle Cap Wilderness Area in in the heart of the Wallowa Mountains in northeastern Oregon offers a one-of-a-kind backcountry ski experience. Wallowa Alpine Huts has the only permit here to provide backcountry tours that include four day long-weekender trips or five day mid-weeker trips.

You’ll start by hiking 4-miles and ascending 1,800-feet to a hut base of 7,500 feet; the base camp consists of four yurts (two for guests, one for crew and one for the sauna!). The Wallowa’s are classic western territory that’s made up of high U-shaped bowls that capture heaps of dry fluffy snow and punctuated by majestic white peaks just shy of 10,000-feet ensuring.

Crabbing on the Oregon Coast!

We’ve got the skinny on Oregon’s succulent Dungeness crab, whether you want to rent the gear and try crabbing on your own, or would rather just head to the docks for your pick of fresh meat.

Oregon Dude Ranch Getaway

"Dude ranching" was born of the lure of the Wild West, and the desire of many Americans to find some solace from the increasingly congested metropolises of the eastern seaboard. The completion of the transcontinental railroads in the 1880s put the West's rugged mountains in reach of visitors, but upon arrival, they found little in the way of accommodations.
